How the SWP calculation works

Each month the corpus first grows at the monthly rate (balance × annual rate ÷ 12) and then the withdrawal is deducted. The tool simulates this month by month across your chosen duration and reports total withdrawn, final balance, and how much growth contributed along the way.

If withdrawals exceed what growth can replenish, the balance shrinks — the simulation shows exactly when a plan breaks.

Worked example

A retiree parking ₹25,00,000 in a hybrid fund, withdrawing ₹15,000 monthly, assuming 8% annualised returns over 20 years:

Initial corpus₹25,00,000
Monthly withdrawal₹15,000
Expected return8% p.a.
Total withdrawn in 20 years₹36,00,000
Final balance₹34,81,701
Growth contributed₹45,81,701

Frequently asked questions

What is a Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP)?
An SWP redeems a fixed amount from a mutual fund at a chosen frequency — usually monthly. Unlike a dividend plan, you control the amount and timing, and only the units needed are sold; the rest stays invested.
How much can I withdraw without exhausting my corpus?
A common guardrail is 4–6% of the corpus per year in early retirement, adjusted for inflation later. At 8% returns, withdrawing about ₹12,500 per month from every ₹25 lakh is broadly sustainable; pushing past that spends principal.
Are SWP withdrawals taxed?
Each withdrawal is a redemption, so capital gains tax applies to the gain portion — equity funds held over a year attract LTCG rates, debt funds are taxed at slab rates. The calculator models pre-tax outcomes.
Is SWP better than a FD ladder for retirement income?
They serve different roles. FD ladders give certainty but historically lower post-tax returns; SWPs from hybrids offer growth potential with market-linked variability. Many households blend both.
