How the RD calculation works
Indian banks compute RD maturity as M = R × ((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) / (1 − (1 + i)^(−1/3)), where R is the monthly instalment, i the quarterly rate (annual ÷ 4), and n the total quarters. Each month's deposit compounds for the months remaining until maturity.
Worked example
Saving ₹5,000 monthly in a 5-year RD at 6% (quarterly compounding):
| Monthly deposit | ₹5,000 |
| Rate · tenure | 6% · 5 years |
| Total deposited | ₹3,00,000 |
| Interest earned | ≈ ₹50,318 |
| Maturity value | ≈ ₹3,50,318 |
