How the CAGR calculation works
CAGR = (Final ÷ Initial)^(1/years) − 1. It compresses a lumpy journey into one smooth annual rate — the rate at which your money would have had to grow every year to travel from the starting value to the ending value.
Worked example
An investment that grew from ₹10,00,000 to ₹25,00,000 over 5 years:
| Initial value | ₹10,00,000 |
| Final value | ₹25,00,000 |
| Duration | 5 years |
| Absolute return | 150% |
| CAGR | 20.11% p.a. |
The same absolute gain stretched over 15 years works out to just 6.29% p.a. — time changes the entire story, which is exactly what CAGR exposes.
